Piano Biomechanics

Investigating the body's role in musical expression

About us

We are a team of pianists and scientists at MIT studying the embodiment of musical expression in elite pianists. Each pianist brings a unique blend of physical ability, talent, training, and artistic vision. Yet, what unites them all is their remarkable ability to deliver living, breathing performances that move audiences deeply. We are investigating the intricate and intimate relationship between the evoked sound and the fluid body mechanics that shape musical expression.

Meet the Team

The big idea

We hypothesize that the musicality, efficiency, and perceived fluency

of movements in elite pianists stem from the body's inherent elastic mechanisms.

The spark

In Fall 2023, during a pilot workshop at the MIT.nano Immersion Lab, we used ultrasound imaging to observe the inner workings of elastic tissues—networks of connective tissue not under direct voluntary control—in a pianist's forearm while they performed

Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 8.
